Conditions of The Catenian Charity Inc. Scholarship

(The Catenians – strengthening Catholic family life through friendship and faith) (Scholarship) is established to assist Australian students enrolled at an Australian University or residential College who cannot afford to pay either tertiary institution tuition fees or tertiary residential college fees.

The grants may only be paid to students who have reached the age of 16 but not yet reached the age of 25. The grants must be paid by the student to an Australian university or college by the student.

Applicants must complete an application form setting out details including the purpose of the grant, the amount required and the monthly budget of their income and expenses including their semester tuition fees and or their weekly residential accommodation charges.

Potential recipients in the first instance must complete an application to their university or residential / teaching college so as to establish their bona fides.

In this form “Charity” means the Catenian Charity Inc. W.A.Reg No. A1019114U

The scholarship is governed by the following conditions.

NAME OF SCHOLARSHIP

     The Catenian Charity Inc.

PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is to assist and encourage a meritorious student for the duration of their studies, for whom educational opportunities are limited because of financial need.

The aim of the scholarship is to advance the interests of young Catholics and to assist them in the choice or pursuit of a career.

The student will have demonstrated drive and commitment to achieve academically, despite financial hardship in order to continue their studies at the an Australian university or college

VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP

The value of the scholarship is $5,000 per annum, to be paid to an Australian university or residential college by the student.

The value of a half scholarship is $2,500 per annum, to be paid to an Australian university or residential college by the student

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled as a full-time student at Australian university or residential college
  2. Have completed at least 1 year of full time study towards their bachelor degree or have completed a bachelor degree; and
  3. Be able to demonstrate that their educational opportunities are limited due to adverse circumstances as set out in the Selection Criteria.

SELECTION PROCESS

Written applications setting out compliance with the eligibility requirements and addressing the selection criteria must be made on the application form available from the Scholarship Master.

Applicants must submit:

  1. A copy of their  academic transcript;
  2. A brief curriculum vitae including present and previous relevant work experience, if any;
  3. Two written current references with the names and contact details of the referees;
  4. A personal statement as outlined in the application form; and
  5. Any other documentation specified in the application form.
  6. Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Master for the purposes of developing a short list of no more than four applicants to submit to the trustees of the “Charity”
  7. The trustees of the “Charity” will make a decision as to the successful recipient and may choose to interview the short-listed applicants if they wish to do so.

SELECTION CRITERIA

In making their recommendation as to which applicant/s shall receive the Scholarship Master and trustees will consider:

  1. The demonstrated financial need of the applicant;
  2. Any responsibility the applicant may have for others (for example, significant carer responsibilities);  
  3. Personal circumstances or background which warrants special consideration;
  4. The ways in which the award of the scholarship would assist the applicant;
  5. Academic merit; and
  6. Any other matters deemed relevant by the Scholarship Master and trustees

The “Charity” will make a decision as to the successful applicant, taking into account the matters set out above and any other matters the “Charity” considers relevant.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Scholarships may be advertised annually in November of the year preceding the year in which the Scholarships are to be awarded (or at a time that is in the discretion of the “Charity”

              ii.         Notice of the scholarship may be circulated among students who have completed at least 1 year of full time study Australian University or residential College. Applications must be submitted to the Scholarship Master by the advertised closing date.

Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Master outlined in Clause 6, in February of the year of award, and submitted to trustees of the “Charity” for their consideration as soon as practicable.

AWARDING BODY

The scholarship will be awarded by the  President of the “Charity”, on the recommendation of the Trustees.

METHOD OF PAYMENT

  1. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the student as determined by the Charity.
  2. Recipients are required to complete a “Gift Expenditure Form” for payment of funds.
  3. .A scholarship is normally paid in two equal instalments in each year of award.
  4. One instalment is normally paid on or following the census date in each of first and second semesters.
  5. Payment of the second and subsequent instalments is subject to the recipient making satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules of the course in relation to which the scholarship is awarded.
  6. Continuation of the scholarship is subject to the recipient remaining enrolled full-time and meeting all other conditions of the scholarship.
  7. Provided you have submitted your scholarship acceptance form and bank account details, you will receive your scholarship payment mid-April (semester one) and mid-September (semester two) pending, if you have confirmed your continuing enrolment and satisfactory academic progress after each census date.
  8. The census date is the date at which your enrolment is considered final. The date is set to comply with legislation and is published on the academic calendar of the tertiary institution.

DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship will be tenable for the duration of the recipient’s current degree at University.

  1. REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
  2. Scholarship recipients are required to submit a mid-year and end of year report to the Scholarship Master, outlining their progress throughout the year.
  3. Reports should include academic results for the semester, an update regarding the circumstances which warrant the recipient to be in receipt of the scholarship, and other relevant feedback.
  4. Scholarship recipients are required to provide a short letter of introduction to the “Charity” and must be willing to speak to Catenian members at 1 or 2 meetings during the course of the year as requested.
  5. Failure to adhere to these requirements in a timely matter will result in scholarship funding being terminated.
  6. The Scholarship Master, will notify the scholarship recipients of any relevant due dates.
  7. Reports should be sent to the Scholarship Master, who will forward them to the trustees of the “Charity”
  1. ADMINISTERING BODY

The scholarship will be administered by the Scholarship Master.

Any rules regarding the awarding of this scholarship must comply with these Terms and Conditions.

  1. PUBLICATIONS

Any thesis, dissertation or other publications resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the scholarship must acknowledge the assistance of the Scholarship and carry the “Charity”  by-line.

  1. PRIVACY

The “Charity” is committed to the principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth) and the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 (Commonwealth) and will not disclose any personal information (as defined in the Privacy Act) relating to this scholarship to any third party without the written consent of the applicant.
